November/December 2002

Hope the end of the semester is going smoothly for all and you're making plans to keep your stations active over the upcoming break if you stay on the air...

1) Congratulations to all finalists and award winners in the first CBI Student Production Awards. A list of winners is posted on the CBI website (collegebroadcasters.org). If you were not there to accept your award, they will be mailed in the coming week.

2) Thanks to all who contributed and attended the national conference in Florida. Special thanks to those individuals who went above and beyond in making various events happen such as Chuck Bailey with Awards, Michelle Betz and staff for cybercast, Andy Marlow for elections and Nick Deninno at National Lampoon Productions for the post awards reception. Please forward any conference feedback to any member of the Board.

3) At the awards ceremony, CBI Board election results were announced. Dan Knight of University of Texas--Austin was re-elected to a two-year term and Gary Hawke of University of Kansas was elected to a two-year term. As no one applied for the student position, the Board is now accepting applications and will make an appointment in mid-December. Interested students should e-mail me (wkozires@brockport.edu) for details. The Board would like to thank Michael Black of Hobart-William Smith Colleges for his term on the Board and his efforts in making this organization a reality.

4) Greg Newton of Ohio University has agreed to be our Elections Coordinator for the 2003 Board election. Eloise Green and Chris Wheatley of Ithaca College have agreed to compile our award winner production for the 2003 awards ceremony.

We are still looking for volunteers for the following integral roles for the coming year:

    -Awards Coordinator
    -Awards Judging Coordinator
    -Cybercast Coordinator
    -Newsletter Coordinator
    -Convention Entertainment Coordinator
    -Convention Tour Coordinator
    -Convention Vendor Coordinator
    -Convention Industry Handouts Coordinator

Please notify us if interested.

5) Checklist of items to take care of before leaving for the holidays:

-if staying on the air, staffing schedule for break
-outdated material taken off station website
-on air shift schedule for next semester in place. News & sports shifts as well if your station does them.
-first meeting of next semester planned
-arrangements made for receiving mail (some college mail rooms shut down or are on limited schedules)
(for FCC licensed radio stations only): -if going off the air for long period, notify the FCC and letter in Public File
-2002 final quarter Issue/Programs list in Public File (due 1/10/03)

6) CBI/CMA New York regional conference is March 20-22, 2003 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. This is a great opportunity to experience New York City and all of the great media outlets as well as over 15 broadcast sessions and much more on topics such as leadership, management and career preparation. Details on the website.

All the best in 2003...
