1) Just 77 days until we all get together in New Orleans for the
National Conference. Are you registered for the conference and booked
at the hotel? Students bringing faculty, faculty bringing students?
Carpool with your student newspaper staff and start media converging on
the trip.
2) In early September, paid CBI member stations will be receiving a
ballot to elect CBI officers. Please look for it and vote for the
people you want to lead this organization into the future.

Broadcasters Lose Major Battle in Online Streaming Case.
Judge Rules Against Radio.
A federal court has thrown out a challenge from the broadcasting
industry against the U.S. Copyright Office, which ruled late last year
that radio stations must pay extra royalties to broadcast over the
Internet.
The U.S. District Court for eastern Pennsylvania dismissed the case
brought by the NAB.
NAB President/CEO Eddie Fritts was quick to respond. "Broadcasters,
record companies and consumers have long enjoyed a symbiotic
relationship whereby airplay on radio stations benefits all parties,
along with generating enormous revenues for the record labels."
"We're disappointed that this unique relationship will be disrupted by
the court ruling. Broadcasters currently pay in excess of $300 million
annually in music licensing fees to compensate songwriters and music
publishers. Any additional fee to compensate record companies would be
unfair and unreasonable, and for that reason, we are reviewing our
options."
The NAB will now have to decide if it wants to appeal the ruling. The
NAB had argued that radio stations shouldn't have to pay the extra fees
and that the Copyright Office had exceeded its authority in making the
ruling.
A REPRESENTATIVE OF PUBLIC RADIO said that college stations'
educational mission should be considered as arbitrators try
to decide how much radio stations and others must pay
copyright holders to stream copyrighted material over the
Internet.

a) letter to faculty from related departments (Communication, Theatre,
Business, Physical Education, Sports
Management, Politcal Science, Journalism, Computer Science, etc)
announcing recruitment meeting

c) chalk classroom boards and sidewalks with meeting information
d) advertise on your own radio station for new members
e) offer to speak about station recruitment during first week of class
f) ask student government officers to talk about station when they
address new students during orientation
g) station appearances at Orientation moving-in day, picnics or other
events
h) mass e-mail to returning majors in related departments about
recruitment
i) note on station website
j) you announce college newspaper recruitment on air in exchange for
them running an ad for yours
k) "Free Tours" sign outside the station during first few weeks of
class for new students
l) flyers around the campus
m) signs around the station with messages from successful alums saying
how much the station experience meant to them
