May 2002 CBI Newsletter

1) Thanks to all who have helped make our voice heard with the webstreaming/copyright issue. It is not over, but we could not have even gotten started without your input, support and help. Special thanks to Will Robodee for his leadership, coordination and late nights on this topic.

2) Deadline for entries for the CBI Awards is June 3, 2002. All entries must be postmarked by that date at the latest. Judging will take place over the summer and winners will receive their awards at the fall convention. Make sure this gets done before you leave for the semester. There is nothing like a resume line that says "National Finalist" or "First Place Nationally"...

3) Check in with our web site (collegebroadcasters.org) over the summer for early bird registration for the fall conference in Kissimmee, Florida October 31-November 2. Book early and save.

4) Andy Marlow of the University of Minnesota has agreed to coordinate the upcoming elections for the CBI Board. We have two two-year faculty positions that will be open and one one-year student position open. Information about how you may apply for one of these will be on the listserv and on the web site in the near future. Actual voting will take place in the early fall with results announced at the fall conference.

5) Station pre-planning ideas for fall:

-have staff come back early and set up a table during orientation move-in day. You get to all the new students first to recruit them to work at your station and, as a listener, they will also be aware of the new station in their newly adopted home (they will put your radio station on their tuner pre-set or TV station will be among those programmed on the remote).
-choose your recruitment meeting day, time and location now and get all flyers & posters printed up. Now they're ready to be put up around campus first thing, first day in the fall.
-arrange to allow station personnel go to the first residence hall meetings in the fall and brief new students on the benefits of working at your station.
-get a list of fall classes in majors that have ties with media (communication, theatre, politcal science, business, sports management, etc.) and schedule veteran station members to appear and talk at first class meetings about how to join your station.
-find out about Orientation events (they're already scheduled) and get your station involved somehow to again spread the word about joining.

6) Have a great summer and best of luck to all graduating seniors entering the workforce.
