January 2003 CBI Newsletter

Hope this finds you all rested and content after the holiday break. Some schools are back already, while others get an extended break but we all have stations to run and/or get ready for the upcoming semester.

1) One day reminder, but Issues/Programs list is to be put in your Public File by January 10th if you operate an FCC licensed station.

2) CMA/CBI Spring National College Media Convention is March 20-22 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City (just blocks from Times Square). Specific details about broadcast and other sessions are coming soon, but conference details and registration is available now on the College Media Advisors website at collegemedia.org under "Conventions". I can tell you that we have quite an impressive group of industry professionals leading ALL of the broadcast panels.

3) The second annual CBI Student Production Awards brochure should be available and in your hands by early March with a deadline of mid-May for entries. A list of last year's winners is available on the website (collegebroadcasters.org). Be on the look-out for great work in your stations and save it! There will be some adjustments in a few of the category descriptions from last year's competition.

4) We are still looking for volunteers to help in the continued development and improvement of CBI in the following areas:

    -Awards Judging Coordinator
    -Convention Tour Coordinator
    -Convention Entertainment Coordinator
    -Convention Trade Publication Coordinator

Please contact me directly if you are able to contribute a little or a lot to help us grow.

6) Thanks to Dan Schumacher and his staff at KTSW from Southwest Texas State University for agreeing to coordinate our third Cybercast at the the fall convention and to Greg Newton from Ohio University, who will be our Election Coordinator for the next round of Board elections.

7) 2003 is a license renewal year for many FCC radio stations. CBI will attempt to provide reminders in future months in this newsletter about the various deadlines and renewal announcements that must be made on the air, but you can also check with your state association or the FCC website (fcc.gov) The first group of states will be airing their Pre-Filing Announcements starting April 1st.

8) Ownership Reports are due in your Public File by February 1st if you are in one of the following states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma.

9) FYI, according to NAB Legal Calendar, all non-commercial television stations must be broadcasting a digital signal by May 1st of this year.
